Why we built Feed Your Gut.

Almost every food app on your phone was built to count calories. That made sense for weight, but it says very little about the trillions of microbes in your gut, which care about something else entirely: fiber, variety and the occasional live ferment.

Feed Your Gut is the app we wanted for ourselves. Point the camera at your plate and see the fiber in grams, every different plant toward 30 a week, and a gut score from 0 to 100 with one concrete thing to try next time. No weighing, no account, no guilt.

What we stand for

  • Count what matters

Fiber, plant variety and ferments are the headline numbers. Calories ride along as an estimate and never bend the score.

  • Show our work

The scoring rules are public, down to the last point, and every claim on this site links to its source.

  • Private by default

No account. Your history stays on your iPhone and in your own iCloud. Photos are deleted after the analysis.

  • No moralizing

There is no “bad” food in the app. The lowest rating is “Low fuel”, because food is fuel for your microbes, not a test of character.

Editorial standards

Health information deserves care. Every article in the Journal follows the same rules:

  1. We rely on peer-reviewed research, systematic reviews and official guidance from bodies such as the German Nutrition Society (DGE), EFSA, the WHO and national dietary guidelines.
  2. Every factual claim is numbered and linked to its source at the end of the article.
  3. We lead with a short, direct answer, and we say where the evidence is limited, observational or industry-funded.
  4. We review articles when important new evidence appears and show the date of the last update.
  5. We do not sell supplements, accept paid placements or publish sponsored content.
  6. Nothing here is medical advice. Feed Your Gut is not a medical device, and we point readers to a doctor or registered dietitian when symptoms need one.
